The Saptarishi Samvat (Laukika Era) in Vedic & Kashmiri Tradition
The Saptarishi Samvat (also celebrated as the Laukika Era, Kashmiri Pandits' Navreh Calendar, and Saptarishi Kala) is the oldest continuously observed astronomical reckoning in India, commencing on Chaitra Shukla Pratipada in 3076 BCE—exactly 25 elapsed years after the dawn of Kali Yuga (3102 BCE).
Unlike ordinary solar or lunar calendars, the Saptarishi Calendar incorporates a macro-cosmic 2,700-Year Great Sidereal Cycle (Saptarishi Chakra). The Seven Sages of Ursa Major reside in each of the 27 Lunar Mansions (Nakshatras) for exactly 100 solar years (27 × 100 = 2,700 years).
In the 12th-century Sanskrit chronicle Rajatarangini (1148 CE), the great Kashmiri historian Kalhana recorded historical reigns using the Laukika Era—where the century digits were traditionally understood from context and the year within the 100-year Nakshatra residency (1–100) was cited alongside the lunar Tithi.
Every spring on Navreh (Chaitra Shukla Pratipada), Kashmiri households consecrate the Thal Barun platter filled with rice, sacred Kreel Pachh (new Panchanga scroll), mirror, curds, walnuts, pen, and gold, invoking Sharika Bhagwati and the Saptarishis at the start of the new cosmic year.
